You recently covered the Olympics in Milan as a freelance reporter and creator. What was that experience like for you, being part of such a global event?
Covering the Olympics in Milan was incredibly special. The Olympics have this unique ability to bring the world together, and being there as a storyteller allowed me to capture not just the competition but the emotion and energy surrounding it. I spoke with athletes, fans, and people from different countries who had all gathered to celebrate sport.
For me personally, it also felt surreal. I grew up in Pakistan and have spent most of my life in Canada, and now my work has taken me to places like the Cannes Film Festival, filming my travel series Wanderlusting in France, being in Paris for the 2024 Summer Olympics, and most recently covering the Milano Cortina Winter Olympics in Milan. Moments like that remind me how powerful travel and storytelling can be.
What I love about the Olympics is the message of unity. Athletes dedicate their lives to their sport, and for a few weeks, they come together from every corner of the world. I feel a similar spirit whenever I travel. No matter where you go, you realize how much we all share despite our different languages or backgrounds. Even during my first trip to Milan, I made wonderful new friends, and experiences like that remind me how travel can connect us in the most unexpected ways.
During the same time, you also attended Milan Fashion Week. How did it feel to be present in the atmosphere of one of the world’s most celebrated fashion weeks?
Milan Fashion Week has such a creative pulse. The entire city transforms, and designers, photographers, stylists, and artists from around the world all come together in one place. I’ve always seen fashion as another form of storytelling, so being there felt incredibly inspiring. It was fascinating to experience that world while also covering the Olympics. One celebrates athletic excellence, the other celebrates creativity and design, but both bring people together from across the globe.
Your show Wanderlusting in France is currently in post-production. Could you share a little about the idea behind this project and what inspired you to create it?
Wanderlusting in France grew out of my love of travel and cultural storytelling. France has such rich regional identities, from historic châteaux in the Loire Valley to vibrant markets in the south, and I wanted to explore those places through the people who bring them to life. The series highlights local artists, chefs, and communities while celebrating the beauty and history of each destination. For me, travel is really about connection, and the goal of the series is to share those meaningful moments with viewers.
You host and produce On Location Vancouver with the support of TELUS STORYHIVE. What do you enjoy most about working on this show and exploring stories connected to Vancouver?
What I love most about On Location Vancouver is the people. Vancouver and British Columbia are filled with incredible artists, entrepreneurs, athletes, and cultural leaders who are doing inspiring things. The show gives me the chance to sit down with them, hear their stories, and share those conversations with a wider audience.
Whether I’m filming in the city or traveling to communities across the province, it always comes back to human connection and storytelling.
