The modeling industry is one that is often associated with glamour and beauty, but for one Colombian model Melissa Varon, it has been a journey that has taken her far beyond the runway. In this interview, she shares her experiences working with diverse teams on international projects, and how she prepares herself to work with new cultures. She also recounts a challenging experience she faced while working abroad, and how humor helped her navigate the situation

Furthermore, she speaks about how her international experiences have contributed to her growth as a model and as a person, and the person outside the modeling world who inspires her the most. Finally, she shares her hope to inspire others, particularly women, by demonstrating that success can be achieved in multiple domains by pursuing passions and interests based on personal enjoyment.

Can you provide an example of a time when you learned something valuable from working with a diverse team on an international project?
In one of my most memorable international projects, I had the opportunity to work with a diverse team in the Maldives. It was during this experience that I learned the importance of respecting and engaging with people and their culture, which has always been my attitude when working in different countries. One instance that stands out was during lunch when I noticed one of the team members taking a break to pray. Rather than just observing, I approached him with curiosity and genuine interest, which led to a meaningful conversation about the Muslim religion. This exchange not only broadened my understanding of different cultural practices but also strengthened our professional relationship. Embracing cultural diversity has truly enriched my experiences in the modeling industry, and I am grateful for every opportunity to learn and grow.

How do you prepare yourself for working in a new country or with a new culture?
Whenever I am preparing to work in a new country or with a new culture, I make it a priority to immerse myself in the local customs and traditions. I start by connecting with people who have lived or worked there, seeking their insights and experiences to better understand the nuances of daily life. Additionally, I delve into books and movies that explore the culture in-depth, allowing me to grasp the stories and emotions that shape the people and their perspectives. To further enhance my understanding, I research the country’s history, taking note of significant events and milestones, as well as familiarizing myself with common behaviors and practices. By taking these steps, I can approach my work with a well-rounded, informed perspective, making it easier to connect with my colleagues and create meaningful professional relationships.

Can you share a challenging experience you faced while working abroad and how you overcame it?
Upon arriving in the United States from Colombia, I faced the significant challenge of having only a basic understanding of English. This language barrier made it difficult to build relationships and communicate my feelings effectively. To overcome this obstacle, I enrolled in language schools, driven by my desire to feel part of the local culture and connect with people. As my language skills improved, I also focused on immersing myself in the culture of the places I lived. For example, at one point, I decided to learn about different sports like golf, tennis, and skiing. Interestingly, during my first golf invitation, I amusingly assumed “tee time” referred to drinking tea. So, there I was, dressed in my best golf attire, armed with a teapot, and ready to pour! It was quite a sight, and everyone had a good laugh, including me. This experience not only highlights the importance of cultural adaptation but also serves as a reminder that humor can help us navigate the challenges we encounter while working and living abroad, even when we find ourselves in a “tea-riffic” mix-up.

How do you think your international experience has contributed to your growth as a model and a professional?
Growing up in Santa Marta, a small town in Colombia, I wasn’t exposed to a great deal of diversity or differing perspectives. My upbringing led me to follow a more traditional path, pursuing a career in chemical engineering. At that time, my curiosity was limited—I didn’t even listen to music from outside of Colombia. However, as I ventured into the world of modeling and began working in various countries, my international experiences transformed me, both as a model and as a person.
These global opportunities opened my mind to new ways of thinking, diverse forms of art, and a greater sense of open-mindedness. Today, I have a deeper appreciation for the unique talents and backgrounds that individuals bring to the table. My international experiences have not only enriched my modeling career but have also played a crucial role in shaping me into a more well-rounded, culturally aware person.

Outside of the modeling world, who inspires you and why?
Outside of the modeling world, one person who truly inspires me is Carlos Vives, a singer from my hometown. Carlos is not only a talented musician but also a dedicated philanthropist, touching the lives of many people in our community, myselfincluded. I’ve had the privilege of meeting him on several occasions, and I am always struck by his genuine engagement and warmth towards everyone he encounters. His commitment to social and environmental causes is evident through his work with the Colombian non-profit organization, Tras La Perla. By partnering with regional and global NGOs, Tras La Perla supports various social and sustainability initiatives in rural Colombia. Carlos Vives’ dedication to creating a positive impact both in our hometown and beyond serves as a constant source of inspiration for me.

How do you hope to inspire others through your modeling career and personal journey?
Through my modeling career and personal journey, I hope to inspire others, particularly women, by demonstrating that we can excel in a variety of areas without limiting ourselves to just one profession. In my own experience, after placing runner-up in the Miss Colombia contest, I pursued a career in chemical engineering for about five years and achieved success in that field. This shows that we have the ability to grow and thrive in multiple domains, regardless of societal expectations.
Another important message I wish to convey is the importance of pursuing passions and interests based on personal enjoyment, rather than seeking validation from others or succumbing to social pressures. By following our own paths and embracing our unique talents, we can create a fulfilling and rewarding life that truly reflects who we are. In sharing my story, I hope to empower others to embrace their potential and chase their dreams, no matter where they may lead.
